Sahara’s Pune Warriors squad announced



Sensational all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to Captain Pune Warriors
Lucknow, 8th March, 2011: Sahara’s Pune Warriors, the latest and one of the most promising entrants in the Indian Premier League, today announced the names of its squad members. The 30 member Sahara’s Pune Warriors squad will be lead by Captain of the team Mr. Yuvraj Singh.
The players adorning the squad are Mr. Yuvraj Singh, Mr. Ashish Nehra, Mr. Robin Uthappa and Mr. Murali Karthik from domestic side, while the international players of the team are Mr. Graeme Smith, Mr. Angelo Mathews, Mr. Tim Paine, Mr. Nathan McCullum, Mr. Callum Ferguson, Mr. Wayne Parnell, Mr. Mitchelle Marsh, Mr. Jesse Ryder, Mr. Jerome Taylor and Mr. Alfonso Thomas.
The young blood of the squad consists of Mr. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Mr. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mr. Dheeraj Jadhav, Mr. Eklavya Dwivedi, Mr. Ganesh Gaikwad, Mr. Harpreet Singh, Mr. Harshad Khadiwale, Mr. Imtiyaz Ahmad, Mr. Kamran Khan, Mr. Manish Pandey, Mr. Mithun Minhas, Mr. Mohnish Mishra, Mr. Rahul Sharma, Mr. Sachin Rana, Mr. Shreekant Wagh, and Mr. Shrikant Mundhe.
On this occasion Mr. Abhijit Sarkar, Director – Sahara Adventure Sports Limited and Head Corporate Communications, Sahara India Pariwar said, “Sahara’s Pune Warriors squad has been constituted with an intention to strike a balance between experience, exuberance, international expertise and promising talent of present and future. Keeping in mind the 20:20 format of the game we are looking to play aggressive and entertaining cricket and are confident to make a permanent mark on the league”. Sahara unveiled the name and logo of its Pune IPL franchise in a glittering ceremony



  • Pune IPL team will be called ‘Sahara Pune Warriors’
  • Saharasri announces 4 welfare schemes for the people of Pune

Pune, April 24, 2010: Sahara India Pariwar, the prime promoter & patron of sports in India, and owner of Pune IPL franchisee, unveiled the name and logo of the Pune IPL team in a grand ceremony at the expansive S.P. College Ground, Pune. The Sahara Group named its IPL team, ‘Sahara Pune Warriors’ befitting the status and rich culture of the city. The unveiling of the logo identity of the team was witnessed by a huge gathering of more than 25,000 enthusiastic crowd. The open-to-all event, organized in association with Maharashtra Cricket Association was the talk-of-the town and a looked-for event for all the cricket enthusiasts of the city.

The ‘Sahara Pune Warriors’ logo comprises of a spear wielding, attacking cavalry-warrior (warrior on horse) in the hue of tricolour. About the concept Mr. Abhijit Sarkar, Head – Corporate Communications, Sahara India Pariwar, said, “The name and logo identity encapsulates the valor, perseverance, endurance and control of the cavalry trooper, synthesizing with speed and agility along with the patriotic fervor which is one of the core elements of Sahara India Pariwar.” (The logo unit of Sahara Pune Warriors can be downloaded from www.sahara.in/iplpune)

The evening was a fusion of cricketing and entertainment excellence, and a mélange of the local cultural heritage and the young and chic tone of the Pune city. The logo was launched in the presence of some of India’s biggest names from cricket fraternity and bollywood. The gala evening included some outstanding performance by local troops and the group of renowned choreographer Shri Shaimak Davar.

On this occasion, ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker & Chairman, Sahara India Pariwar, also announced 4 welfare schemes for the people of the Pune.

In the rural areas of Pune district, Sahara will extend Public Health Services through 8 Mobile Health Unit (MHU) vans. Each van will have a qualified doctor and will be equipped with primary health equipments and medicines. Every day the vans will provide free of cost primary health care to more than 400 people.

Sahara will provide individual accident cover to the 17.07 lakh voters of Pune Lok Sabha constituency. Under this accidental death cover, in case of an accidental death of any individual, Sahara will provide Rupees One lakh as financial assistance to the nominee from the family of the deceased.

Sahara has also announced financial support for the promising sportspersons of Pune District. Under the scheme, sportspersons playing at the state level will be given Rs 5000 per month, those playing at the National level will be given Rs. 10000 per month and those playing at the International level will be given Rs. 20,000/- per month.

Last but not the least, for the meritorious students of Pune district, scholarships will be provided by Sahara. Under this scheme, 300 students at the graduation level will be selected and each student will be provided Rs. 750 per month as scholarship. At the post graduation level, 200 students will be selected and each student will be provided a monthly scholarship of Rs 1500. In all 500 meritorious students of Pune will benefit under this scholarship scheme.

Speaking on the launch of the Pune IPL Team’s identity, ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara, said, “It is a moment of great pleasure for us to present the identity of the Pune IPL team to the people of Pune and the cricketing enthusiasts across the world. We have just started the journey and in this short span, the support, affection and respect which we have received from the people of the city is very heartening and makes me feel that the city is my second home. I personally believe that love and affection is baseless without the sense of duty towards the loved ones. With the same emotions and as a reciprocation of the love, I am extending these welfare services to the people of Pune and hope that we will be of some help in the welfare of the people.”

Shri Ajay Shirke, President, Maharashtra Cricket Association, said “We are proud of Sahara India Pariwar and their Pune IPL team. On behalf of the people of Pune, I would like to thank Saharasri Subrata Roy Sahara for his involvement with Pune and assure him all support where ever he will require in this endeavor”.

The sponsor of Indian Cricket and Hockey, Sahara India Pariwar, had earlier, adopted Indian Boxing, Wrestling, Shooting and Archery in addition to providing support to a total of 56 sportsmen in these four disciplines until after London Olympics 2012. The group, in order to uplift sports at domestic and grass root level, supports the legendary Calcutta Football League, Sheesh Mahal Cricket Tournament and many other sports at the national, state and district levels. The group has extended its sponsorship to the Uttar Pradesh State cricket team which represents the state in Ranji Trophy and all other domestic tournaments. Earlier, in the year 2009, Sahara had initiated ‘The Sahara Indian Sports Awards’ with an intention to bring together all sports, including those which are very popular and also those which are not so popular, together on a common platform to recognize and honour the achievements of Indian sportspersons who have taken the pride of the nation to the highest level and kept the tricolor flying high. The awards are aimed at providing a forum for encouragement to young sporting talents and motivate them to bring laurels to the nation and sports.
